Peel pears but leave stems intact.
Place the sugar, water and wine in a large saucepan and bring to the simmer, stirring until the sugar is dissolved. Add cinnamon and orange rind.
Add pears and simmer on low heat for 1 hour or until tender.
Lift pears out and arrange on a serving dish. Remove cinnamon and orange rind from the pan and discard, then boil the red wine mixture to reduce it down to a thick syrup and pour over the pears. Allow to cool to room temperature.
